Representatives from Senior and Junior hockey Leagues met with Hockey Alberta on February 8 to review the recent updates from the Government of Alberta. Acknowledging the fact that some Leagues did not start operating this year, and others have already announced an end to the season, the Leagues unanimously decided to conclude all regular league play for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.
While league play is concluded for this season, the opportunity for Teams to return to on-ice activity at some point remains a possibility. The Government of Alberta announced a four-step plan, “A Path Forward”, for when business and other activities – such as hockey and other team sports – could be allowed to return. Step 3 of the plan outlines the potential return of ‘adult team sports’. The government has outlined that transition from one step to another will be based on provincial hospitalization numbers and they have indicated that the timeline for reaching Step 3 could be mid to late March.
Hockey Alberta will continue to work closely with government representatives to explore all options that could allow players to return to on-ice activity and we remain committed to keeping our membership updated throughout this process.
All Senior, Junior B, Junior C and Junior Female Team rosters were locked as of 12 noon today and Teams will not be permitted to register any new players for the remainder of this season. If Teams do choose to return to the ice, once we are permitted to do so, they will be able to offer activity for those players that are currently registered to the team only.
If the government regulations allow, members wishing to operate sanctioned on-ice activity must apply via Hockey Alberta’s online Special Event Sanction system in the Centre Ice Portal.
